Rakesh is a researcher, writer and editor seeking ways to co-create alternative futures. A WFSF member since 1994 when he attended a futures course for youth in the Asia-Pacific, Rakesh was elected Executive Board Member during 2001-05 and 2005-09, before becoming Director of the Federation in July 2008.
Rakesh attempts to bring the perspective of India/South Asia and of the developing countries to Futures Studies. Rakesh is Founder-Director of Alternative Futures – a research group that focuses on ideas, insights, initiatives, innovations and inspiring pioneers that can catalyse processes of social and personal transformation. Through its work the group wishes to work towards an alternative future characterised by ecological sustainability, social justice, spirituality and cultural pluralism.
Rakesh is also a Consulting Editor of the journal Futures: Journal of Policy, Planning and Futures Studies, since 2003. Special issues he has edited include Indian Futures, Transformative Initiatives and Global Mindset Change (co-edited, forthcoming).
